Description
| Prozac (generic name fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used as an antidepressant. This medication has an effect on various chemicals and biochemical compounds that may become unbalanced, causing depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Fluoxetine is generally used to correct the imbalances, and is therefore used to treat conditions such as major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. |
Side Effects
Prozac can cause an allergic reaction in some patients, with symptoms such as skin rashes, hives, swelling of parts of the face or head, and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include seizures, tremors, muscle stiffness, involuntary twitching, blistering and skin rashes, problems with balance, and confusion.
Warnings
Take Prozac only as instructed by your doctor. Dosage may occasioanlly change, so it is advisable to consult with your doctor regularly to update your information. Do not break or chew the capsule, as it should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as it is remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In which case, wait until the scheduled time for the next dose. Do not double-up on the doses. Seek emergency medical attention in the event of a suspected overdose.
