Fioricet is composed of three primary components: acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine. Acetaminophen is a chemical used for pain relief, and has occasionally seen use as fever medication. Butalbital is a barbiturate that slows down the nervous system and acts as a relaxant. Caffeine is believed to constrict dilated blood vessels, which contribute to headaches. The three, working in conjunction, can be used to provide relief for complex tension due to muscle contractions.

Side Effects

Some people can experience an allergic reaction to Fioricet. Symptoms of this include difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, closing or tightening of the throat, and slow breathing. Other side effects include the possibility of liver damage, unusual bleeding or other blood-related problems, low blood sugar, and abdominal pains.

Warnings

Take Fioricet exactly as instructed by your doctor. Each dose should be taken with a glass of water; food and milk can be taken if the drug causes an upset stomach. If a dose is missed, do not take a double dose of the medication, as this may cause side effects. Take the medication as soon as remembered, unless the next dose is in an hour. Wait until the prescribed time before taking the next dose if that is not the case. In the event of an overdose, contact the nearest emergency room.
